The Overberg region is a premier wine-country tourism destination. Each of the wineries in this region offers a unique wine-tasting and culinary experience with the chance of meeting the wine-makers during your visit. Day outings to the wine-making areas of Botriver, Franschhoek, Elgin Valley, Stanford, Hermanus and the renowned Hemel-and Aarde valley are all within an hour’s drive from VillaChad.

Kleinmond has beautiful scenic trails of varying distances and degrees of difficulty. A short walk from VillaChad leads to an easy hike up Jean’s Hill. A coastal path leads one from the Kleinmond beach and lagoon to the Kleinmond harbour area.

For ocean lovers Kleinmond’s Blue Flag beach provides swimming, surfing and kayaking opportunities. During the whale season from July to November, whales may be seen breaching out in the ocean.

Rooisand Nature Reserve on the Botriver lagoon is a prime bird-watching site with a wooden hide overlooking a variety of wetland and coastal birds. Apart from this, it is also home to a herd of wild horses, thought to be the only herd of wetland-dwelling wild horses in the country. Various theories abound as to their origin!

Birding enthusiasts come from all over the world to the Overberg to observe some of its abundant and unusual species, specifically adapted to the fynbos environment. This increase in tourists to South Africa and the Overberg region is due to the abundance of bird species and a growing respect for nature. Among the endemic birds is the Cape Rockjumper, typically found between the nearby villages of Pringle Bay and Rooiels.

The entire family may enjoy some excellent rock climbing at Kleinmond. The Palmiet Crags are located above the Palmiet River. There are some short, challenging routes and some medium-grade face routes. Cool off afterwards with a refreshing swim in the Palmiet River.

The beautiful Kleinmond Golf Course is kept in pristine shape. In 2007, the course was rated by Complete Golfer as the third-best nine-hole course in South Africa. Drinks and meals are available at the clubhouse.

Other attractions at nearby Betty’s Bay include the colony of endangered African Penguins at Penguin Point and the beautiful Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, where in January visitors flock to see the Red Disas in Disa Kloof.
